HEY Gaman made all the running to secure Listed honours in the EBF Stallions King Richard III Stakes at Leicester.

Having finished second in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) over a mile last term, Hey Gaman’s stamina over this seven furlongs was not in doubt.

Frankie Dettori put that to good use by sending the 9/4 favourite to the front straight from the stalls and setting a solid pace.

Try as they might, none of the opposition could get close enough to make an impression on the James Tate-trained colt, who went on to score by two and a quarter lengths from Larchmount Lad without being seriously tested.

“He ran some great races in defeat last year, so it was lovely to see him get his head in front. I thought it was a really good reappearance,” said Tate.

“I think if you look at his record his best runs are either a straight seven or a mile round a bend.

“Frankie gave him a very well-judged ride and he seemed to gallop them into submission.”

Tate is already plotting a return trip to France.

He added: “We’d be very tempted to go back to Longchamp, because that is probably one of his favourite tracks where he was second in the French Guineas.

“There’s a meeting there in about a month’s time with some group races, so I’ll just refresh my memory which ones are which and which group races are over which distance – and we will probably choose one of those.”
