WHAT do you have to do to have a race named in your honour? I pose the question as it was raised in a conversation I had with a racegoer at Gowran Park recently. The gentleman approached me to ask if there was a way to influence those who can do so to name a race in honour of one of the finest riding talents ever to emerge from this country.

It is said that ‘a prophet is honoured everywhere except in his own town’. Is it so in the case of one Pat Eddery. The Newbridge, Co Kildare native was a genius in the saddle and he has all the honours and accolades to prove it. He was even given an honorary OBE in 2005 in recognition of his services to racing and inducted into the Curragh’s Hall of Fame.
