CLASSIC-WINNING miler Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) is one of the all-time great stallions, and he has laid the groundwork to preserve his dynasty through a string of sons and daughters who are excelling at stud.

Al Kazeem, Makfi, New Bay, Night Of Thunder and Poet’s Voice are Group 1 winners who have sired at least one top-level winner at stud, with Makfi taking it further by having a Group 1-winning son (Make Believe) who has a first-crop classic star (Mishriff) on the books. Standouts such as Benbatl (new in 2022), Ghaiyyath (foals), Space Blues (new), and Too Darn Hot (yearlings) are at early stages of their new career, whereas Zarak and Time Test made an exciting start as freshmen in 2021.

Of these, only Time Test did not win at the highest level on the track, and that is an omission for which he looks set to compensate in his current role. He won a Sandown maiden from three juvenile starts and did not make his blacktype debut until easily winning the Group 3 Tercentenary Stakes over 10 furlongs at Royal Ascot the following summer, so one might have expected an encouraging freshman campaign rather than an exciting one, perhaps a blacktype earner or two among an inevitable string of maiden and conditions winners.

Instead, Time Test produced five blacktype two-year-olds, two of them Group 3 scorers, two listed winners, and the other a leading Irish juvenile whose array of such form featured a Group 1 placing.

Time Test went on to win the Group 2 Joel Stakes, Group 2 York Stakes and Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes, he was placed in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes and Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap, and his fourth to Arabian Queen and Golden Horn in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes was once of only twice he finished out of the frame.

His notable first-crop daughters are Romantic Time (dam by Sir Percy; Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes), Tardis (dam by Equiano; St Hugh’s Stakes), and Sunset Shiraz (dam by Shirocco), the latter having been placed in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, Group 2 Debutante Stakes, Group 2 Park Stakes, and Listed Silken Glider Stakes.

Time Test’s early sons feature German Group 3 scorer Rocchigiani (El Corredor) and Italian pattern-placed stakes winner The King’s Horses (Kheleyf).

Time Test has 54 two-year-olds, 85 yearlings, and he covered 160 mares in 2021. He had a sole six-figure yearling last year, a 400,000gns Tattersalls Book 2 colt, plus five foals who made in excess of 50,000gns in Newmarket.

No wonder his fee has jumped from its consistent £8,500 to £15,000, and he will likely be fully booked at that too.

TIME TEST (GB), Bay 2012. Won six races, £606,032, from 7 furlongs to 1 mile 2 furlongs, 2 to 4 years including, Shadwell Joel Stakes, Newmarket, Gr.2, Sky Bet York Stakes, York, Gr.2, Betvictor Brigadier Gerard Stakes, Sandown Park, Gr.3, Tercentenary Stakes, Ascot, Gr.3, also placed second in Fourstardave Handicap, Saratoga, Gr.1, Woodford Reserve Manhattan Stakes, Belmont Park, Gr.1, Fort Marcy Stakes, Belmont Park, Gr.3, and third in Coral Eclipse Stakes, Sandown Park, Gr.1.

Retired to Stud in 2018, and sire of the winners of 19 races, and £317,770, including ROCCHIGIANI (GB), ROMANTIC TIME (GB), TARDIS (GB), THE KING’S HORSES (GB) and Sunset Shiraz (IRE)
