THE 2021 freshman sires show great promise. Three already have a Group 1 winner, a string of others got at least one blacktype scorer, and Profitable (Invincible Spirit) was among them. He finished fourth in the championship title race and had a healthy double-digit tally of winners.

His son Glengarra (dam by Peintre Celebre) was placed in listed races at Fairyhouse and Tipperary, Mitbaahy (dam by Invasor) achieved the same feat at Ayr and York, but Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes star Quick Suzy (dam by Marju) headed three blacktype winners.

The Gavin Cromwell-trainee was a bargain, costing €20,000 at the Goffs Autumn Online Yearling Sale. Following a second-place finish at Tipperary in April, she ran away with a six-furlong Curragh maiden and chased home Hermana Estrella in the Group 3 Fillies Sprint Stakes at Naas, all before her English trip. She looked a potential Group 1 Commonwealth Cup filly in the making following that length-and-a-quarter defeat of subsequent Breeders’ Cup heroine Twilight Gleaming at Ascot.

The Ger Lyons-trained Head Mistress (dam by Street Cry) missed third place by a short head in the Group 3 Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr but won both her other starts including the Listed Curragh Stakes in August.

Although a five-furlong standout, Profitable is bred to be a source of sprinters, milers and some who are effective over a little farther, and he already has his first stakes-winning miler in Mr Professor (Alhaarth). The Alice Haynes-trained gelding won three times over the trip last year, including the Listed Silver Tankard Stakes at Pontefract, and he was runner-up in the Listed Jumeirah Classic over the mile at Meydan earlier this month.

Profitable’s excellent freshman season is notable given he was a maiden winner and multiple nursery runner-up at two, getting a listed success the following May and his first pattern one at the age of four.

He kicked off that campaign with wins in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes (from Jungle Cat), Group 2 Temple Stakes (from Mecca’s Angel) and Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes (from Cotai Glory). He finished fourth to Limato in the July Cup and, at five, placed in both the Prix de l’Abbaye and another King’s Stand.

Profitable had seven six-figure yearlings in 2021, headed by a 425,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 filly, and his top breeze-up lot was a 105,000gns Craven colt. He is by the sire of stallion standouts such as I Am Invincible, Kingman and Lawman, he is a half-brother to the Group 3-winning sprinter Ridge Ranger (Bushranger) and a grandson of the prolific US-raced Daniella Drive (Shelter Half). This could be a big year for Profitable.
