SINCE January 5th, 2008, drivers of vehicles transporting cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses and poultry on journeys over 65km have been required to hold a certificate of competence.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has approved the Racing Academy Centre of Education (RACE) to provide training and examinations in accordance with the Council Regulation for the transport of horses. The content of the exam is based around the new legislation, when you apply for the qualification you will be sent a workbook which summarises this information for you.
The course and exam takes a combined total of approximately two hours. Certification is valid for 10 years.
RACE generally runs the course and exam three times per year, subject to sufficient numbers applying. The cost is €150 for the course and exam, to include registration, workbook, exam, corrections, certification, regardless of location (group discounts are available, check racingacademy.ie for more detail). RACE are happy to deliver the training and exam off-site subject to sufficient interest.
Arrangements can be made for a reader to be available at exams held at RACE and arrangements can be made for the questions to be read for you in English if you cannot read English, but you must be able to understand the questions and course material to successfully complete the exam, advance notice to RACE is essential.

Upcoming course and exam dates can be found on racingacademy.ie and all dates are subject to sufficient demand (minimum of six people). Once a place on a course is confirmed, a cancellation with less than 10 day’s notice will be subject to a €50 cancellation fee.
