WITH the Sunshine Tour right around the corner, long journeys in a truck are also on the horizon. This can lead to stiffness and discomfort for both horses and their teams alike. Often we have plans in place for the horses but not for ourselves. With that in mind, here are three stretches that can help alleviate tension and loosen up muscles after a prolonged truck journey:

Cat-Camel Stretch

  • Start on your hands and knees in a tabletop position.
  • Inhale as you arch your back, drop your belly towards the ground, and lift your head and tailbone towards the ceiling (this is the “cow” position).
  • Exhale as you round your back, tucking your chin to your chest, and drawing your belly button towards your spine (this is the “cat” position).
  • Repeat this flow for 1-2 minutes, moving between the cat and camel positions.
  • Hip Flexor Stretch

  • Stand with one foot forward and the other foot back, creating a lunge position.
  • Bend your front knee while keeping your back leg straight.
  • Lower your hips toward the ground by pushing your front knee over your front toe, feeling a stretch in the hip flexor of the back leg.
  • Hold the stretch for 15-30 seconds, then switch legs and repeat.
  • Ensure your movements are slow and controlled.
  • Standing Forward Bend

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
  • Hinge at your hips and bend forward, reaching towards your toes.
  • Keep your knees slightly bent if needed to accommodate your flexibility.
  • Allow your upper body to hang loosely, feeling the stretch in your hamstrings and lower back.
  • Hold the stretch for 15-30 seconds, breathing deeply.
  • Remember to perform these stretches slowly and gently, breathing deeply and never forcing your body into uncomfortable positions. It’s also a good idea to walk around and perform some light exercises to improve circulation before stretching. If you have any existing medical conditions or concerns, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a fitness expert before trying new stretches.
