IT was a memorable week for northern-born jockey Brian Hughes as he recorded his 1,000th victory over jumps in Ireland and Britain when landing the novices’ handicap chase at Wetherby last Friday week on the Nicky Richards-trained My Old Gold.

The Newtownhamilton native, who started out on the flat here with Kevin Prendergast, is the 25th jockey to achieve this feat and the ninth among currently active riders. That latter list is headed by Richard Johnson behind whom Brian has finished runner-up in the last two British jump seasons.
