The victory of Sprinter Sacre in Wednesday’s Queen Mother Champion Chase may live long in the memory of all. There is nothing quite like the return of a former legend to the pinnacle once commanded. The time was decidedly good, Sprinter Sacre posting 171. He was not the one making the pace, however, and sectionals do call into question whether Special Tiara and Un De Sceaux (both of whom got 165 timefigures) might have done better ridden a bit more conservatively.
Un De Sceaux went for home after four out, and it was only after the next that Sprinter Sacre looked comfortable again and swept through. His time up the run-in (18.4s) was the slowest by the winner of a chase on the first two days by some way, and even Special Tiara and Un De Sceaux were coming back at him late on. The identity of the best two-mile chaser around was not established once and for all by this race.
