FRANKEL’S status as one of the greatest European racehorses looks likely to stand forever, and his rise through the stallion ranks surged in 2021 when he was champion sire for the first time, the first British stallion with the title since Mill Reef in 1987.

That was a time when having just one big-name horse would do, and getting the Derby winner could seal the deal, but the world has changed and a stallion needs a large back-up crew to support his brightest star. Frankel had Hurricane Lane, Snow Lantern and Inspiral along with Derby and King George hero Adayar. Alpinista contributed three Group 1s to his European earnings, Hurricane Lane was an Arc-placed Group 1-scorer in France in addition to his two local classic wins, while many others won at listed or pattern level.

Further afield, Frankel had top-grade success with Wild Beauty (Canada), Converge (Australia) and champion Hungry Heart (Australia), and with an overall career tally of 84, it won’t be long before he joins Teofilo as a son of the great Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) who has hit the 100 stakes-winners landmark.

To achieve greatness as a sire, he must have at least a few sons who can carry on his name; will we be able to speak of the Frankel branch of Galileo’s line? It won’t be long before we get some early indicators – 2022 freshman Cracksman’s yearlings made up to 410,000gns. Eminent (New Zealand), Elarqam (France), Cunco (Chile), Mozu Ascot (Japan), Logician (England) and Mirage Dancer (Ireland) are also at stud – the sons of Frankel are in demand.

Without Parole was a six-length winner over a mile at Newcastle on his only start at two, trounced Ostilio by the same margin at Yarmouth and then landed a listed contest at Sandown, all at odds-on, at three.

He was also the favourite when winning the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, despite taking on proven Group 1 performers. He beat classic-placed Gustav Klimt by half a length, the pair over three lengths clear of the rest. Third-placed Wootton missed classic blacktype when fourth in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains on his previous start, but fourth-placed Tip Two Win had been runner-up in the 2000 Guineas; Irish 2000 Guineas victor Romanised and star juvenile and future sprint ace U S Navy Flag were behind.

Without Parole’s US time yielded a trio of Grade 1 thirds, including the Breeders’ Cup Mile, but some thought him unlucky in the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland, his strong late finish from a difficult position carrying him into fourth, only beaten by a total of three-quarters of a length by the previous year’s Preakness Stakes winner, War Of Will.

His Grade 1-winning half-brother Tamarkuz (Speightstown) is a blacktype sire from a small number of runners in North America, whereas his dam’s half-brother Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) has had Grade 1 winners in the USA and South America.

In addition to inevitable two-year-old winners, Without Parole looks likely to get his best in the seven-to-12-furlong range.
