PIVOTAL (Polar Falcon) broke a track record at two, was a dual Group 1-winning sprinter at three, and quickly established himself as a major sire at Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket.

He has done it all, with more than 30 Group/Grade 1 stars, notable sire sons and an outstanding array of broodmare daughters. His name will live on in pedigrees for a long time.

It is safe to say that Siyouni is the outstanding stallion son of Pivotal. The Aga Khan homebred was a Group 1 winner at two, Group 1-placed at three and commands a fee of €150,000 at Haras de Bonneval. He has eight top-level winners among 68 stakes winners, five are European classic winners and a sixth will bid for such glory in 2023, namely champion Tahiyra. Three of the quintet are fillies, but Coolmore has had the foresight to stand the two colts, St Mark’s Basilica and Sottsass.

Sottsass’ fee this year is €25,000, a small reduction on his initial price, and his first yearlings will be sold this autumn. Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget for Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm, Sottsass was a three-length winner over a mile on the second of two starts at two.

In his second season he ran away with a 10-furlong listed contest at Chantilly a month before beating Persian King by two lengths in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club-French Derby over a half-furlong further at the same venue, and he landed the Group 2 Prix Niel a few weeks before chasing home Waldgeist and Enable in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He was rated the champion three-year-old coly in Europe.

Sottsass added the Group 1 Prix Ganay over a mile and two furlongs at Chantilly at four, was two lengths fourth to Magical in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, and crowned his career with a neck defeat of classic star In Swoop in the Arc, hitting the front a furlong out. Persian King was third.

Sottsass has two older half-sisters; seven-time Grade 1 winner Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie), and the Grade 1-placed, Group and Grade 3 pattern scorer My Sister Nat (Acclamation), and he is out of a full-sister to the Group 3 winner Leo’s Starlet (Galileo).

His dam’s siblings also include the Group 1-placed stakes winner and blacktype producer Anabaa’s Creation (Anabaa), and blacktype scorers who appear on the page include Fast Cure (Cure The Blues) and Leonnatus Anteas (Stormy Atlantic), the latter a juvenile champion in Canada where his wins included the local equivalent of the Dewhurst or National Stakes.

Sottsass was a €340,000 Arqana Deauville August Sale graduate, is inbred 4x4 to Miswaki (Mr Prospector) on his dam’s side, and given the support he has received has the potential to become another classic sire for the Coolmore team.
