HARRY Angel enjoyed a stakes double last weekend, setting a new record for freshman sires who had never before notched two blacktype winners so early in their first three-year-old season.

Al Dasim confirmed his position as a leading sprinter with a convincing victory in the Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint at Meydan on Super Saturday. George Boughey’s charge recording his fifth win on the bounce and becoming the first ever three-year-old to beat the older sprinters in this race. He now heads to the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night.

Shortly afterwards, and this time at Lingfield, Iconic Moment retained his unbeaten record and successfully stepped up in class when taking the Listed Spring Cup. He holds an entry in the Group 1 2000 Guineas.

World Champion sprinter Harry Angel sired 25 juvenile winners last year, including Group 2 Gimcrack runner-up Marshman, and he is also sire of the stakes winner Proverb, plus Group 1 Blue Diamond third Arkansaw Kid. Harry Angel’s first three-year-olds have reached a Timeform rating of 90 or higher eight times so far in 2023.

The best three-year-old sprinter in the world in 2017, when he was rated 125, Harry Angel was again one of the top two sprinters as a four-year-old, only 1lb below Battaash, with these two well clear of any other sprinters in Europe.

Purchased by Godolphin midway through his racing career, Harry Angel was trained by Clive Cox, and made his second start in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury, winning impressively by two and a half lengths. New course records for six furlongs were set on both of Harry Angel’s first two runs in 2017, when he was second to Blue Point in the Group 3 Pavilion Stakes at Ascot and for his runaway victory by four and a half lengths in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock.

At Royal Ascot Harry Angel was second in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup, three-quarters of a length behind Caravaggio with Blue Point third, but he soon took his revenge in the Group 1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket, scoring by a length and a quarter from Limato, with Caravaggio fourth. There was another Group 1 success for Harry Angel in the Sprint Cup at Haydock in September, winning very easily by four lengths from Tasleet, The Tin Man and Blue Point.

Harry Angel began 2018 with victory in the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes at York, and ended his racing career with an excellent second to Sands Of Mali in the Group 1 British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot, with Tasleet, The Tin Man and Limato all behind him.

Harry Angel is one of the best sons of the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes hero Dark Angel, sire also of such fine sprinters as the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye star Battaash, the Group 1 July Cup hero Lethal Force and the flying filly Mecca’s Angel, twice winner of the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.
