JUVENILE Group 1 winner of the Racing Post Trophy, and triple classic hero Camelot (Montjeu) made an exciting start as a freshman, second-crop and third-crop sire, and since 2020, now listed in the general sires’ championship title race, his stature grows year by year.

While his fee increased steadily from €25,000 through to €75,000 last year, Coolmore has trimmed this back to €60,000 in 2023.

Camelot’s first crops saw him notch up an Irish Derby with Latrobe, a USA Grade 1 victory with Athena and a juvenile Group 1 success with Wonderment. His fourth season really witnessed a breakthrough when he more than doubled his number of Group 1 winners.

Even So won the Group 1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the Curragh, Sunny Queen took the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Bayern, and there was also a remarkable Group 1 double in Australia when Sir Dragonet, a Group 1-placed pattern winner for the Aidan O’Brien team, lifted the famous Group 1 Cox Plate on his debut for new connections down under.

More remarkable, however, was the Group 1 South Australian Derby victory of Russian Camelot, an Irish-bred colt winning a classic in the southern hemisphere despite being younger than his rivals. He added the Group 1 Underwood Stakes and was placed in races such as the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes, Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes and Group 1 Cox Plate.

Now that tally of top-level winners for Camelot has gone into double figures. Santa Barbara was runner-up here in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes, but in the USA she triumphed twice at Grade 1 level, taking the Belmont Oaks and the Beverly D Stakes.

Luxembourg established himself as one of the best of his generation with successes in the Group 1 Vertem Futurity at two, and added the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes last year. He could win again at this level in 2023.

Meanwhile, last year’s three-year-old Sammarco won the Group 1 German Derby, and doubled his tally when adding the Group 1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennan.

Among 31 Group 1 winners by the much-lamented Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells), Camelot is out of the Group 3 Dahlia Stakes winner Tarfah (Kingmambo) and from a family that struck Group 1 gold most recently with Prix de Royallieu and British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes heroine Wonderful Tonight (Le Havre).

Camelot’s yearlings made up to 450,000gns in 2022.
