SCAT Daddy (Johannesburg) was only 11 when he died, and his departure came before the start of that season. The Ashford Stud stallion also shuttled to South America and left behind 31 top-level winners among 133 blacktype scorers, quite a record.

Winner of the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at two and the Grade 1 Florida Derby at three, Scat Daddy was a classic sire in Chile before his son Justify landed the US Triple Crown in 2018, but his influence has been global, including some outstanding performers in Europe.

Many will associate Scat Daddy with speed, and sons and daughters like Caravaggio, Lady Aurelia, No Nay Never, Sioux Nation and Acapulco are proof of his ability in that sphere. However, Scat Daddy was a Grade 1 winner over eight and nine furlongs, most of his best have excelled in the seven to 10-furlong range, and Justify was not his first to hit the heights over a mile and a half.

This ability to get Group and Grade 1 stars from five to 12 furlongs has given him a valuable edge, because even the quickest among his sons has the potential to sire milers or 10-furlong horses, making them potential classic sires.

Coolmore’s No Nay Never has demonstrated this, his top-level winners featuring the Grade 1 Premio Las Oaks heroine Brooke in Chile, while Alcohol Free won Group 1 races from six furlongs to a mile. Madame Pommery is a classic-winning miler.

Ten Sovereigns is a Group 1 winner over six furlongs, while 2022 saw No Nay Never sire three Group/Grade 1-winning juveniles.

No Nay Never’s fee is €175,000, his Coolmore teammates Ten Sovereigns and Blackbeard stand for €17,500 and €25,000 respectively, but breeders can use Arizona for a mere €5,000. A full-brother to the Grade 1-placed, Grade 2 winner Nay Lady Nay, Arizona was precocious. He was an eight-length winner over six furlongs at the Curragh in May of his juvenile season, added the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, and finished fourth to Earthlight in the Group 1 Prix Morny.

He concluded his first season by chasing home Pinatubo in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes over seven furlongs, was third to that champion in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh and was a close fifth in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. At two Timeform only rated Pinatubo and Kameko higher.

MV Magnier

A €260,000 Arqana Deauville August sale purchase by MV Magnier, Arizona is out of a half-sister to an Italian juvenile Group 3 scorer, and to the dam of the French champion juvenile Dabirsim (Hat Trick), twice successful at Group 1 level that season, Arizona’s grandam won the Group 1 Oaks d’Italia and was second in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes.

She comes from a branch of the family that is responsible for Group 1 winners Sea Of Class (Sea The Stars), Charity Line (Manduro) and Final Score (Dylan Thomas). Arizona’s fourth dam, Madina (Beau Prince II), won the Prix Morny, and her classic-placed daughter Nonoalca (Nonoalco) produced the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes scorer Great Navigator (Gulch).

Nearly a quarter of the entire first crop of Arizona’s foals sold last year, and they averaged €21,684, three times his starting fee at stud. Peter Nolan spent €60,000 for his best son at the sales, a half-brother to the Group 2 Coventry Stakes runner-up Eldrickjones.
