THE second day of the Derby Sale was headed by a pair of €230,000 geldings and the first of these was a son of Maxios consigned by Mark Dwyer’s Oaks Farm Stables who was knocked down to Bobby O’Ryan.

A €30,000 yearling purchase in France and owned by Dwyer, Brendan Holland, Willie Browne and Roger Marley, this gelding is enjoyed a timely boost to his pedigree this year as his dam is a half-sister to the dam of the brilliant juvenile hurdler and triple Grade 1 winner Vauban.

O’Ryan reported that his purchase would join Gordon Elliott.

The other €230,000 transaction came when Joey Logan and prominent point-to-point trainer Matthew Flynn O’Connor joined forces to outlast Aiden Murphy for a son of Walk In The Park from Ken Parkhill’s Castletown Quarry Stud. This gelding is out of the dual Grade 3 winner Zuzka who is the dam of three winners from as many runners.

Henrietta Knight busy

The frenetic second day saw Henrietta Knight pick up two choice stores on behalf of Brandy Love’s owner Mick Grech.

The first of these was a €220,000 son of Authorized from Sluggara Farm whom Walter Connors had purchased privately in France. A son of a stakes winner on the flat and a half-brother to a listed-placed chaser in France, this gelding will go into training with Willie Mullins.

Also destined to carry the Grech colours is a €210,000 son of Getaway who shares his sire with the owner’s promising Gordon Elliott-trained bumper horse I Am Fortunata. This €95,000 foal was sold by Norman and Janet Williamson’s Oak Tree Farm and is out of a winning half-sister to Wichita Lineman and Rhinestone Cowboy.

The previous afternoon Oak Tree supplied a Kapgarde gelding who cost Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls €185,000. The €60,000 yearling is by a sire whom the trainer and agent have a great liking for and he is out of a half-sister to the Nicholls-trained Grade 1 performer Tatenen. In all Nicholls and Malone combined to purchase six lots, five of whom made at least €100,000.

Magnier purchases

Over the course of the sale M.V. Magnier made several significant purchases and these included a €220,000 son of Walk In The Park from Michael Fitzpatrick’s Kilminfoyle House Stud. This €43,000 foal is a half-brother to the Cheltenham bumper third Wait For Me.

The previous afternoon Magnier struck for a pair of attractive fillies including a €160,000 daughter of the late Coolmore stalwart Flemensfirth. This filly, a €41,000 foal, was sold by Johnny Collins’ Brown Island Stables and she is a sister to Porthill who joined Willie Mullins for £250,000 after reaching the frame on his sole point-to-point outing in the spring.

Another Magnier purchase came in the shape of a €100,000 Walk In The Park filly out of a half-sister to the Grade 1-winning Coney Island. She was consigned by Niall Bleahen’s Liss House.
