RESULTS from this year’s Derby Sale suggest that the demand for foals should be strong at the upcoming Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale.

The median price at the Derby Sale was a record €50,000. There were 35 lots sold for six-figure sums, the top price being €310,000.

The November National Hunt Sale has proved to be a profitable hunting ground for pinhookers, with the 2022 store season seeing several impressive touches. At the Derby Sale examples included a €43,000 foal that developed into a €220,000 Store, €20,000 that evolved into €130,000, and €9,200 to €92,000.

Last year’s November NH Sale saw 678 foals sold at a median price of €13,500, not quite a record but very close to the 2019 figure of 13,750. The yearling median price 12 months ago was €8,750.

This year’s sale kicks off next Saturday (November 5th) with 111 yearlings on offer. The last lot should be through the ring shortly after the Champion Chase is run at Down Royal, and there’s plenty of time before the Breeders’ Cup coverage starts!

Next day sees the first of 1,151 foals offered for sale, and this continues right through until Thursday afternoon, when just over 100 broodmares and breeding prospects will be put on the market. Who could forget Benie Des Dieux fetching €350,000 during this session last year. Now her first foal – a filly by Walk In The Park – is the star name in the foal section of the world’s biggest National Hunt auction.

Following feedback from vendors and purchasers Tattersalls Ireland has reduced the number of foals selling daily from approximately 280 to 260, allowing the sale to finish at an earlier time each day.

The yearling session kicks off the sale with multiple siblings to blacktype horses including the City Light half-brother to Triumph Hurdle winner Burning Victory, the Sea Moon half-brother to dual Grade 1 winner The Storyteller, and the Soldier Of Fortune half-brother to Grade 1 winner Foxy Jacks.

Yearlings out of blacktype mares include the Crystal Ocean daughter of Grade 1-placed and listed-winning Polly Peachum and the Telescope son of dual Grade 3 winner Tally Em Up.

The foal session features 133 foals out of blacktype dams, 113 siblings to blacktype horses and 29 siblings to Grade 1 performers.

Benie Des Dieux is not the only Grade 1-winning mare with her first foal on offer. Colreevy also has a foal by Walk In The Park for sale and this one is a colt.

There’s a Yeats full brother to dual Stayers’ Hurdle hero Flooring Porter, as well as a Milan half-brother to both Grade 1 scorer Waiting Patiently and Grade 2 winner McFabulous.

Other siblings to high-class performers include half-brothers and -sisters to Ballycasey, Cabaret Queen, Champ, Hewick, Minella Cocooner, Relegate, Stattler, Summerville Boy, The Shunter and Zanahiyr.

Leading consignors supporting the breeding stock section include Ballincurrig Stud, Ballyreddin Stud, Baroda Stud, Bishopstown Stud, Boardsmill Stud, Castledillon Stud, Closutton Stables, Goldford Stud, Hobby Horse Stud, Martinstown Stud, Railstown Stud, Springfield Stud and Sunnyhill Stud.

A number of mares catalogued are blacktype performers themselves as well as several who have produced blacktype individuals.
