THE two-day Tattersalls Ireland July Store Sale kicked off on Wednesday with a mixed bag on the market and, as of 6.30pm with about 50 lots left to sell, the clearance rate was just 60%.

Heading the trade by tea-time was a son of Order Of St George consigned by Niall Bleahen's Liss House. This €37,000 foal was bought today by point-to-point handler Jonathan Fogarty for €55,000.

Fogarty, who enlisted Charles Shanahan to bid for him, said: “He will go back to Gaynestown to be broken and go point-to-pointing in the spring. He is a quality horse, a lovely mover, and out of a Shantou mare - everything I like. He is the first Order Of St George I have had. I'm looking forward to getting him home.”

Early in the day The Glebe Farm sold a son of the dual Derby winner Harzand closely related to Cheltenham winner Labaik for €52,000 to Brian Lawless. After seeing off agent Tom Malone for the gelding, Lawless said: “He will go for a point-to-point and then be for resale; hopefully we will get to Tattersalls Cheltenham in the spring. He is a fine model and a fine specimen of a horse, and he moves well. We are happy to get him, and there will be a few of us involved. It is the first by Harzand for us.”

Malone successfully picked up a son of Feels Like Dancing consigned by Eoin McDonagh's Shanaville Stables for €35,000. Malone said: "Feel Like Dancing has had Festival winners, has a few good ones on the ground, and I bought a nice one myself in the spring. This chap is for Will Biddick, who has some owners for him. Hopefully, the horse will go on, do the job, and will be point-to-pointing in the spring. This is a horse who was entered in the Derby Sale and did not get there, and he is a fine sort."

Standing at Whytemount Stud, Feels Like Dancing is the sire of Grade 1 winning hurdler Dancing City.

In terms of numbers, agent Tomáš Janda was the busiest buyer on the day. By 6.30pm he had bought four horses bound for the Czech Republic.Janda told the media that his clients were favouring stores as it has become too expensive to buy horses off the flat.

The sale continues on Thursday.
