THE 2024 edition of the Ballinasloe Horse Fair promises an exciting showcase of equestrian excellence, with a series of lunging and breeding competitions that will highlight the very best in Irish horse and pony breeding.
Taking place over two weekends, the Fairgreen sand arena will become the centre stage for equine enthusiasts, showcasing future stars of the show jumping world and celebrating Ireland’s deep-rooted equestrian heritage.
The first weekend kicks off tomorrow, Sunday, September 29th, with two events: the Credit Union Horse of the Fair Lunging Competition and the Jim Derwin Equestrian Pony of the Fair Lunging Competition. Both are open exclusively to three-year-old horses and ponies, respectively, and have become renowned for attracting top-tier equine talent from across Ireland.
The pony competition, open to ponies measuring 148cm or less, will commence at 12.30pm. The competition offers attractive prizes, with €600 for first place, €250 for second and €150 for third.
Immediately following the pony lunging event will be the horse class, open to three-year-old horses. With a first prize of €700, second prize of €500 and third prize of €300, this competition is one of the most anticipated events at the Ballinasloe Fair.
For both competitions, entries are taken on the day and competitors must produce their passports.
Mare and foal classes
The second weekend of the Ballinasloe Fair brings even more equestrian excitement, with the mare and foal classes, set to take place on Saturday, October 5th. These new classes for 2024 will highlight the best of the Registered Connemara broodmares and foals, including separate competitions for colt foals and filly foals. With prizes ranging from €200 for first place to €50 for third, the competition promises to be intense.
In addition to the Connemara classes, there will be classes for Irish Draught broodmares and foals, offering further opportunities for breeders to showcase their stock. Entry is free and competitors are reminded that all foals must be led, and passports are required for all broodmare entries.
These classes will start at 12.30pm, and entries will be taken from 11.15am at the Fairgreen sand arena.
