EMMET McNamara was yet another racing personality we bumped into at the Dublin Horse Show and the Derby-winning jockey popped up again on Sunday morning, featured in the Business Post.
The Coolmore Stud accountant answered the paper’s questions on how he manages his money and the headline certainly caught our eye: “Life’s too short to budget”.
However, it turns out he is pretty sensible with his dosh, having started his pension when he was 18 (is this a record?) and he is especially prudent since he became a father over a year ago. “Expenditure on concert tickets, alcohol and weekends away is down to pretty much zero, while spending on nappies has skyrocketed.”
But don’t be fooled into thinking Emmet has given up on dreams and adventure. An accomplished athlete, Emmet has taken to the bike this year and is looking for some two-wheeled challenges.
Looking further ahead: “I’d love to have a crack at the Gaucho Derby and bring my great pal Gary Carroll with me. It’s a 10-day, 500km multi-horse adventure race across the pampas and mountains of Argentina. The entry fee is $17,500.”
Pretty sure that would be a unique Derby double for Emmet. If he can promise us a couple of articles from Patagonia then The Irish Field will lob a few quid in the pot.
