FIVE years on from his Epsom Derby success on Serpentine, Emmet McNamara was involved in a very different race recently as a key member of Team Ireland which finished third at an Inter-Celtics Athletics Race at Trail de Guerlédan in Brittany, France.

Attached to Dundrum Athletics Club in Tipperary, Emmet finished an impressive eighth overall out of a field of 1,700.

Those in racing already knew Emmet was a talented runner as he won the Jog for Jockeys in 2018, completing 5k around the stiff Curragh track in under 17 minutes.

A former champion apprentice, Emmet retired from race-riding in 2023 and is now an accountant with Coolmore. He lives in Carlow and rides out for Conor Hoban in Kildare or for his dad Eric in Rathkeale, while still keeping his hand in with RTÉ Racing when required.
