THE Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale will revert to its one-day format this year, with 272 yearlings catalogued to sell on September 2nd. This marks a significant drop from 466 last year, when an increased offering and extension to two days saw figures fall.
The Tattersalls team and future buyers will be buoyed by graduates’ success so far this season, led by Havana Hurricane’s win in the Windsor Castle Stakes. Eve Johnson Houghton and Highflyer Bloodstock’s 9,000gns buy marginally betters the result of their 10,000gns purchase Chipotle, who won the same race four years earlier.
The son of Havana Gold later resold for 210,000gns after his second stakes success. Fellow 2024 graduate Flowerhead looks sure to add to the sale’s stakes-winning tally after finishing second in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, and boasts a strong chance in today’s Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot.
Largest draft
The Starman filly’s breeder and consignor, Tally-Ho Stud, is responsible for the largest draft in this year’s catalogue at 21. Their leading freshman sire has six lots catalogued, while top two-year-old sire Mehmas has four entered, Cotai Glory nine and Kodiac three.
Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said: “Yet another Royal Ascot two-year-old winner for the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale in 2025 underlines the sale’s extraordinary record as a source of top-class juvenile talent in its short history.
“Havana Hurricane joins the ranks of star graduates such as Bradsell, with their respective purchase prices of 9,000gns and 12,000gns illustrating the remarkable value to be found at the sale.
“Additional incentive to buyers is provided by a substantial increase in the prize money for the Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes and the Tattersalls October Auction Stakes which will now both be run for £200,000 each, underlining Tattersalls’ commitment to rewarding owners and further enhancing the appeal of the sale to a wide cross-section of domestic and international buyers.”
