MAGNA Grecia, winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket this year, has been retired and will stand at Coolmore Stud. He is the only colt by Invincible Spirit to win Group 1 races at both two and three years,

It is exactly a year since Magna Grecia won the Group 1 Vertem Futurity at Doncaster, having previously won his maiden at Naas and chased home subsequent classic winner Persian King in the Group 3 Autumn Stakes.

The colt reappeared in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, winning by an impressive two and a half lengths from King Of Change, who won last Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.

After reportedly pulling a hamstring when third in the Irish 2000 Guineas, Magna Grecia was not seen again until finishing down the field on heavy ground at Ascot last weekend.

At 340,000gns Magna Grecia is Invincible Spirit’s highest-priced colt foal, while Timeform described him as “medium-sized, a taking sort physically, robust and well made, a bruiser of a colt”.

Invincible Spirit’s influence as a sire of sires continues to grow with Kingman and Cable Bay being very exciting second and first crop sires in Europe respectively, while I Am Invincible sired a record 28 stakes winners in Australia last season. Magna Grecia’s dam Cabaret was a Group 3 winner as a two-year-old.

David O’Loughlin of Coolmore said: “Magna Grecia is a top-class prospect by the sire of Kingman. He’s got the pedigree and the good looks and he beat so many good horses in both the Vertem Futurity and the 2000 Guineas.”

His fee will be announced at a later date.
