Passing of Tim Heenan RIP

THE funeral took place on Thursday of Tim Heenan (85) of Ringroe, Borrisokane. A brother of the late stallion owner Philip, Tim worked for Nenagh (now Arrabawn) Co-Op for 40 years and was a keen greyhound racing fan. A noted local historian, Tim will be fondly remembered by his brother Denis, extended family members and wide circle of friends.

IPC Minimus Championships

THE Irish Pony Club’s National Minimus Championships, sponsored by Auto Boland of Waterford, take place this weekend in counties Kilkenny and Tipperary where 213 young athletes are set to compete in swimming, cross-country riding and running.

Ten members of the IPC have been selected to represent Ireland in two teams in a home international, taking on two teams from Northern Ireland and one from England. Iona McQuarter, a member of the West Percy Branch, stands out on the list of entries as the sole competitor from Scotland.

Laois IDHBA show date

THE Laois Branch of the IDHBA is running their annual show in Stradbally on Sunday, July 3rd. There is a full range of in-hand classes for youngstock; mares and foals. Please see Pony Tales on page 107 for more information.

Judge availability crux in NI

GRANSHA Equestrian posted online they had to cancel the show scheduled for next Saturday due to a lack of availability of accredited judges. “New requirements by HSI mean that all judges need to have completed a PSNI check which needs to be approved by HSI. There are currently delays in this process which is seriously limiting the number of judges who can judge at our shows,” said the post.

HORSE Sport Ireland announced the Gain Equine Nutrition Irish squad for the U21 (Young Rider) FEI European Eventing Championships which take place at Hartpury, Gloucester from July 25th to July 31st.

Charity grants scheme open

MINISTER for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, recently launched the Animal Welfare Grant Programme for Registered Animal Charities for 2022.

Open to registered charities, the closing date for the receipt of completed application forms is July 1st 2022. Almost €4 million in funding was allocated to nearly 100 animal welfare charities last year.
