Allen wins ‘Star’ vote

MANY congratulations to Wexford international show jumping rider Bertram Allen who is the winner of the public vote in the February Gain Equine Nutrition/The Irish Field Star of the Month 2022 award. The other nominees were Andrew Bourns, Mikey Pender and Conor Swail.

Cavan Stallions and Equine Expo

A FINAL reminder that Cavan Equestrian Centre’s Stallion Show and Equine Expo takes place tomorrow, Sunday, March 27th at noon with doors open from 11am. There is everything from stallion, stabling, trucks, trailers, stable bedding, arena surfaces and all other equine accessories along with food and refreshments. Loss of Jack Mealiff

THE death occurred of well known horseman Jack Mealiff, Drumacoon, Newbliss, Co Monaghan at Esker Lodge Nursing Home, Cavan in the care of the staff and family. Predeceased by his wife Rowena and grandson Gary, he was the adored father of Norman, Jacqueline (Jim Magennis, Belturbet) and Wendy (Melvin Brogan, Clones). Jack will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his daughters, son, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours, extended family and by all who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.

William Roulston RIP

THE death took place of William Roulston MBE of Cranagh Road, Coleraine, a dear friend to many in SJI Ulster Region who was instrumental in the running of many shows at Portrush. He passed away in the care of staff of the Ratheane Private Nursing Home, Coleraine. Predeceased by his wife Norrie, and brother of the late Cyril, he was the brother-in-law of Priscilla and Anges and a much-loved cousin and uncle. William was a committee member of both the Ulster Region and National Balmoral committees for many years as well as a keen point-to-point enthusiast. May he rest in peace.

Passing of Ciaran McGurgan RIP

ARMAGH Riding Club has expressed deepest sympathy to the family of their late club chairman Ciaran McGurgan of Ennisclare Road. He is survived by his partner Paul, his parents Betty and Boe, brothers Adrian and Sean, Maura, Joanne, Molly and extended relatives and many friends. The club described him as a wonderful man who supported, encouraged and inspired everyone he met. May he rest in peace.

Hunting supports Embrace fund

THE Westmeath Foxhounds raised over €1,000 for farming charity ‘Embrace’ which helps people affected by farming tragedies. John Fagan of the hunt said: “Hunting wouldn’t be possible unless farmers allowed us access to their land and this really worthy charity is a way to support the rural community on which we depend on so much. Thank you to the farmers of Westmeath for allowing us access to their lands.”

Case adjourned

A DISCIPLINARY hearing by the British Horseracing Authority involving Olympian Sir Mark Todd was adjourned. Todd is before the BHA after footage emerged of him striking a horse with a tree branch during a cross-country clinic.
