MODERN jockey and equestrian safety vests have evolved dramatically in recent years, with lightweight air-vest technology now complementing traditional body protectors across racing, eventing and everyday riding. Today’s leading models are designed not only to protect the spine and ribs, but also to stabilise the neck, reduce rotational movement and absorb crush injuries during falls.

Among the most talked-about systems are tethered air vests, which inflate within milliseconds when a rider parts company with the saddle. Brands such as Freejump Airbag Air Vest, Helite Equestrian Zip’In 2 Horse Riding Air Vest and Riding Airbag Vest Hit Air Complet MLV3-H are increasingly visible at elite competitions and on most Irish eventing yards now.

Many modern designs are slimmer and more breathable than earlier generations, allowing riders greater flexibility while still meeting stringent safety standards.

Traditional body protectors are also becoming lighter and more ergonomic. New-generation foam technology and segmented panels mean Level 3 protectors now offer improved movement and comfort without compromising protection. Companies including Racesafe with their Motion Air Adult Jacket and Komperdell with their Ballistic Flex Fit Vest are now focusing heavily on rider mobility alongside the vital impact absorption.

Growing emphasis

For jockeys in particular, there is growing emphasis on integrating safety technology seamlessly into race-riding equipment. Advances in materials science, rapid inflation systems and data-led injury research are shaping the next generation of protective wear, as governing bodies across equestrian sport continue to prioritise rider welfare.

While no vest can prevent every injury, experts increasingly view modern air vests and body protectors as an essential layer of defence in a high-risk sport.
