Harry Swan, son of the legendary jockey Charlie Swan, was delighted to ride his first winner at Worcester on Monday.

Swan senior was champion National Hunt jockey in Ireland on nine occasions and is best known for partnering the brilliant Istabraq to win the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham on three occasions.

His 16-year-old son was aboard the Tim Hyde-trained Irish raider Stacey Sue in the Vine Tap Intermediate Open NH Flat Race and having won a point-to-point and a bumper at Cork in her homeland, she was the 5/6 favourite to beat her six rivals.

Swan sent his mount straight to the lead and she was ultimately a comfortable two-length winner.

The winning rider told At The Races: “That was brilliant. I got her off in front, she went a nice even canter and quickened away really easily. I’m only 16, so I can’t get my point-to-point licence yet. Hopefully I can take it out next year. It’s nice to get the winner, especially after bringing her all the way over here.”

Swan senior was on hand to welcome his son back into the Worcester winner’s enclosure. He said: “He didn’t do much wrong. It was great. You’re hoping first of all that he doesn’t mess up! I’ve only been to this course twice and I rode a winner each time, so it’s nice he has as well.

“He’s quite tall. Hopefully he can ride as an amateur anyway, for the time being, and go to school and college. We’ll see what happens after that.”
