TREO Eile was established in 2020 to connect, support and promote the transition of thoroughbreds into rewarding second careers. As appreciation for the thoroughbred’s versatility continues to grow, so too does the community helping these horses thrive beyond the track.

For many former racehorses, retraining begins with time, patience and education. The showing ring has become an important first step for horses adjusting to a new career, allowing them to gain confidence and experience in a supportive environment.

Through the Tattersalls Ireland Treo Eile Showing Pathway Series, riders and horses are encouraged to begin that journey in an accessible setting before progressing into disciplines such as show jumping, eventing, dressage, polo and leisure riding.

The pathway has highlighted the remarkable adaptability of the thoroughbred. While some horses go on to compete at the highest levels, others find fulfilling second careers as leisure horses and amateur mounts, proving the breed’s willingness, intelligence and versatility.

Build confidence and knowledge

Treo Eile supports this transition through education, community and opportunity. Its website offers guidance for owners and prospective riders on retraining, rehoming and caring for former racehorses, while educational clinics and seminars are held throughout Ireland, continue to build confidence and knowledge around life after racing.

The organisation also connects horses with new homes through its online platform, where thoroughbreds are listed directly by their current owners. A growing network of approved retrainers is available to help riders source and produce suitable horses for their next chapter.

Across Ireland, Treo Eile supports thoroughbreds competing in a wide variety of disciplines through sponsorship, prize money initiatives and partnerships with national leagues and competitions. The organisation also showcases retrained racehorses at major races meetings, including at Leopardstown Racecourse and Naas Racecourse, where “Meet the Racehorse” demonstrations introduce racing audiences to thoroughbreds now excelling in new careers.

Funded by the industry for the horse, Treo Eile is proudly supported by breeders, stud farms, sales companies and organisations, including Horse Racing Ireland, the Irish EBF, and Godolphin, all sharing a commitment to thoroughbred aftercare and welfare. With industry-wide support growing, Treo Eile is helping ensure more racehorses than ever enjoy successful and rewarding lives after racing.
