FOUR of the six runners in last Saturday’s Group 2 Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte were trained in Britain, and the raiders filled the first three places.

Odds-on favourite Eddie’s Boy (Archie Watson/Hollie Doyle) tried to repeat his front-running tactics in this six-furlong contest, having won a Group 3 over the same course and distance last month. However, the son of Havana Grey ran out of steam in the closing stages and was caught by Charyn, trained by Roger Varian and ridden by Mickael Barzalona.

A grey son of Dark Angel, Charyn was bred by Guy O’Callaghan at Grangemore Stud and sold for 250,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. He races for owner Nurlan Bizakov, also owner of recent Group 1 winner Belbek, another ridden by Barzalona.

Charyn had previously finished third in the Mill Reef Stakes behind his exciting stable companion Sakheer.

Barzalona had two other winners on the Chantilly card, both for trainer André Fabre and owners Godolphin. They first combined to win a listed race for three-year-olds with Life In Motion, a homebred filly by Sea The Stars who has already been Group 2 placed this season.

The same connections also clicked with the talented seven-year-old Magny Cours in a warm 10-furlong all-weather event on Saturday. By Medaglia D’Oro, Magny Cours was having his first start since finishing last of 10 in the Dubai World Cup in March. He holds an entry in a Group 3 in Bahrain next month.
