1.15 Congrats To Nina, Our Local Star Maiden Hurdle (Div I) 2m 4f

This could go to Smooth Scotch, who put up an encouraging effort on his second start over hurdles at Naas in February. He finished third to the impressive Bring On The Night on that occasion, improving markedly from his debut effort over the same course and distance two weeks previous. It’s feasible he could step forward again, which would make him hard to beat.

Level Neverending won two bumpers for Joseph O’Brien and was only a neck away from winning on his hurdles debut for Gordon Elliott, when second to In From The Cold at Wexford in October. Not seen since, he may need this run, but the ground may suit him better, having raced on heavy at Wexford.

You can double down on the Bring On The Night Naas form mentioned above by backing Snake Oil to win this second division, after he finished second to the Willie Mullins runner there, just ahead of Smooth Scotch.

That was a good performance from Barry Connell’s horse, considering he had been off the track a long time beforehand, but his previous maiden hurdle form is useful - finished third to Wide Receiver in a Leopardstown contest - and he clearly has talent.

Point/bumper winner Glenglass looked a real smart prospect before disappointing on his only hurdles run to date and may be best watched for now. Arlo has done nothing special yet, but his last two runs over hurdles have been solid, and he can put his experience to good use.

Jeremys Flame sets a good form standard but she was a disappointing favourite having been unruly in the preliminaires prior to her previous run at Naas three weeks ago, and she could be worth taking on now.

She beat Dolcita comfortably at Thurles on her penultimate start but the Willie Mullins-trained mare gets a 3lb pull at the weights and returns to the course and distance of her beginners’ chase win, where she was a 14-length winner.

Her only other run at Fairyhouse was one of her best efforts over hurdles, when third to Minella Melody in the Grade 3 Solerina Mares’ Novice Hurdle.

Darrens Hope has a chance as well. She has to reverse form with both the aforementioned but her last two runs have been really good – a third in the Leinster National and second in a Grade 3 novice contest at Limerick last week.

SELECTION: DOLCITA

It’s hard to get away from Where’s Frankie, who arrives here on a four-timer, with all of his wins coming at this track. Karl Thornton’s gelding has won twice over hurdles, and once over fences in between, and he can race off a chase mark which is 9lbs below his current hurdles assessment.

School Lane is having his 31st start today, but he continues to hold his own in handicap chase company and he has lots of good form at Fairyhouse.

Berkshire Royal just gets the vote. Willie Mullins’s seven-year-old ran creditably on his first run of the season in a Grade 3 at Thurles in February, going down to The Goffer by a short margin. He will strip fitter now, the better ground should also suit him and it’s significant that Paul Townend is riding him.

Jody McGarvey probably was set to keep the ride on Arctic Warrior anyway, having ridden him to victory in a handicap hurdle at Wexford last time. This step up in trip could suit him.

4.05 Tom Quinlan Electrical Novice Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m

Despite having to concede weight all around, Flame Bearer looks the one to beat. Pat Doyle’s seven-year-old was an easy winner of his maiden hurdle over this course and distance and then more impressive when taking the Grade 2 at Naas last time, where he had Ha D’Or well covered and recorded a good time. This ground should suit him fine and he can continue his progress.

It will be interesting to see if Hawai Game or Largy Debut can get back on track here, but a more solid option could be Deploy The Getaway. He hung to his right throughout his previous run in a Grade 3 at Naas, so can do better now, with a first time tongue tie also applied

SELECTION: FLAME BEARER

Getaway Queen gets the vote. David Budds’s mare struggled to land a blow in a listed mares’ hurdle at Wetherby last October, but she was taking on good ones there, and her SP of 100/1 illustrated the task at hand. Prior to that her last four runs over hurdles were all to a good standard, a couple of which came in stronger contests than this one.

Dazzling Dove is interesting for local trainer Tom Gibney, who is having another big season. She managed much better when given her first start in a handicap hurdle last time (fourth at Clonmel), and she is open to progress now.

Battling Bessie is preferred after she narrowly finished ahead of Pink In The Park in the Grade 2 mares’ bumper at the Dublin Racing Festival.

Peter Fahey’s mare went to the front travelling best at Leopardstown, and showed a good attitude when approached on both sides, only for the latest challenge of Lily Du Berlais to mug her right on the line. She had consistent form in bumpers prior to that so can hold form with Pink In The Park and others in behind.
