There is huge shock and sadness in Jim Bolger's Coolcullen yard in Co Carlow this weekend at the very sad and sudden passing of John Hayes at his home in Castlecomer.
A native of Mallow, Co Cork, John has been a major part of the trainer's team for almost 40 years.
He rode successfully as an amateur in the early part of his career and was also a renowned producer of Connemara ponies.
John was a true expert with horses, with an exceptional understanding of them and a remarkable ability to judge their character and potential. His knowledge, experience and good judgment earned him the respect of all who knew and worked with him.
One of his greatest legacies is that he passed on his expertise, passion and love of horses to his children, ensuring that his knowledge and values will continue for generations to come.
Beyond his expertise, he was a valued colleague and a good friend. John’s presence, wisdom and kindness will be greatly missed.
John is survived by his wife Bernadette, and children Shauna, Caoimhe, Saoirse and Colin.
His family have expressed their thanks to "the first responders, paramedics and Gardaí who assisted, to all our wonderful neighbours, family, John’s work colleagues and friends for helping in anyway they could."
His funeral arrangements will be made known later.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
