DAVID Pipe paid £380,000 for Irish point-to-point winner Know The Score at Friday night's Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham Sale.

The four-year-old Flemensfirth gelding, who won at Ballinaboola last Sunday, was consigned by Sean Doyle's Monbeg Stables.

A total of £3,712,000 was spent at the sale, up 82% on last year. The average jumped 37% to £90,537 and the median rose 20% to £60,000.

Pipe said of his sale-topping purchase: "I loved the horse. He was very impressive when he won his maiden and was quite an expensive store at the Derby Sale. He is by a fantastic sire and has a real good pedigree. He has been bought for the Angove Family who have Poker Play running here tomorrow at Cheltenham."

Pipe was also the purchaser of Queen's Cave who posted a high class display on her debut run when she took the four-year-old mares' maiden at Dromahane to win by 10 lengths for Aidan Fitzgerald. "She's a real nice racy filly and was very impressive when winning," the trainer said.

Good Man Jim came into the ring with a big reputation; he impressed connections when ran pillar-to-post setting a scorching pace to win impressively by 14 lengths at Dowth Hall for handler Michael Goff and owner Dick Frisby. Plenty of players expressed interest but it was Roger Brookhouse that came out on top securing the son of Martaline for £360,000. Underbidder was Charlie Swan.

Point-to-point and recent six and a half length bumper winner Gallahers Cross was sold for £260,000. Trained by Peter Fahey, the five-year-old was knocked down to Highflyer Bloodstock.

Lust For Glory was the highest priced filly on the evening selling to Highflyer Bloodstock for £240,000. The daughter of the highly sought-after Getaway posted a high-class display on her debut run when she won the mares' maiden at Lisronagh by five lengths. She was consigned by Denis Murphy's Ballyboy Stables.

The three-year-old Unexcepted was placed third on his hurdling debut at France and drew the attention of Charlie Swan who purchased the son of Anzillero for £200,000 from French-based consignor Emmanuel Clayeux. The gelding is a half-brother to the Willie Mullins-trained Great Field.

Tattersalls Ireland's Richard Pugh said: "In the past few weeks, Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham Sale graduates have been enjoying a particularly rich vein of form and more notably from horses who have been through the ring here in recent times; Finian's Oscar has exploded onto track since being purchased at this sale just 12 months previous - a winner today at Cheltenham and winning a total of six races since purchase, two of those Grade 1s and two listed.

"On The Blindside, purchased in this sales ring at the February Sale, remains unbeaten and won the Grade 2 Ballymore Novices' Hurdle here today also.

"It was apparent in the days and weeks leading up to the sale that we had assembled another very strong bunch of horses and the combination of continued confidence in the product we have been selling along with a notable collection of horses has led to extremely strong trade resulting in an increased turnover of £3,712,000 and a top price of £380,000 - the second highest price for a horse at Cheltenham Sales on record.

"Irish pointers have proven hugely popular but we have also seen fierce demand for French horses and we look forward to following their successful careers on racecourses."
