I WAS set the task of writing the veterinary feature for our monthly publication The Kingsley Klarion and advised by my father that, following his reference in a recent Straight Talking column to the pros and cons of keeping horses in the field during winter, I might write about the conditions these horses are predisposed to, such as “rain scald” and “cracked heels”.

But one thing I seem to have in common with my father, whether it be revising for veterinary exams or writing articles, is a struggle for motivation until a deadline is imminent.
