WINTER returned to an otherwise dry Victoria to provide an appropriate backdrop to Ballarat’s hosting of the A$350,000 Grand National Steeple. Richard Cully and trainer Kathryn Durden had Wells primed for a fourth Grand National win and punters agreed sending the Galileo gelding out as a favourite of the 4,500-metre contest. Those hopes were short lived though as Cully and Wells parted ways at the third of 16, opening up the race.
