Lombardo in Goodwood

Goodwood Stakes (Group 1)

MICK Price and Michael Kent capped off a tremendous Adelaide Carnival winning the Group 1 Goodwood with the $18 chance Lombardo, to complete seven wins for the training duo across the three feature racedays.

Starting from the second widest gate in the 1,200 metre Group 1 handicap, Lombardo, much like Snapdancer in the Robert Sangster Stakes two weeks earlier, was able to work forward and cross the field to find the lead.

Left alone in front, Zac Spain was able to swing into the straight and put a two-length margin into his pursuers. Hard ridden to the line, the I Am Invincible gelding won by nearly two lengths from the Magnus gelding Halvorsen and the Zousatar gelding The Astrologist.

A winner of eight from 16, Lombardo is now unbeaten in three starts at Morphettville.

“I just said to Zac, ‘I’m not worried about what goes on in this race, just back yourself, back your horse and ride your own race’. I don’t want to be talking about tactics and who to follow and who not to,” said Price.

“It is very good for Zac because he came to me as an apprentice (on loan) and he’s a very good kid. He’s a very good, hard worker and I was glad he was able to maintain his association with the horse. It’s very good for him.”

The Price and Kent team finished their day with three group race winners having earlier won the Group 3 David Coles AM Stakes with the Written Tycoon juvenile colt Maximillius and the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic with the Akeed Mofeed filly The Amazonian.
