RACING mourned the loss of Red Cadeaux last Saturday after trainer Ed Dunlop and owner Ronnie Arculli made the final decision to euthanise the eight-year-old gelding. Having been operated on in the days since he broke down in the Emirates Melbourne Cup, the prognosis initially seemed bright but an irreversible loss of blood flow below the sesamoid operation to Red Cadeuax’s near-fore hoof left his connections with no alternative.

“This is my saddest day in racing. Red Cadeaux was a much-loved member of our family and my thoughts are with his owner Mr Arculli and my staff, particularly Robin Trevor-Jones and Steve Nicholson, who spent every day caring for this horse,” said Dunlop. “Unfortunately the complication was irreversible and the decision to euthanise the horse, whilst terribly hard, was made in his best interests.”
