AMONG the sponsors of the showing section at last weekend’s Tattersalls Ireland July Show were Weatherbys Ireland (small riding horse class), Treo Eile (both ex-racehorse classes) and Broadleas Stables (small/lightweight amateur ridden hunter class).

Based in Stamullen, Co Meath, Broadleas Stables is a breaking and pre-training yard which was established in 2018 by dual-purpose jockey Conor Maxwell and his wife Karena and has been expanding ever since.

Conor, who has been seen to groom for his good friend Kieran Ryan at Dublin, explained their sponsorship of the class. “The show at Tatts always attracts a good standard of horse, I’ve been involved with the Ward Union Hunt (one of the organisers) for a long time and the Hospice is a wonderful charity to support.

“While we mainly concentrate on thoroughbreds at Broadleas, I’d never turn any horse away and we usually break about half a dozen sport horses or hunters a year. As with the racehorses, it’s nice to see the half-breds go on to achieve success.”
