THE 2017 Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale got off to an outstanding, record breaking start at Doncaster today with the strongest catalogue in the sale’s history delivering massive increases on last year’s record Day One figures.

Last year’s opening day produced 15 yearlings that sold for six-figure sums, a total that was comfortably surpassed today with 26 yearlings making £100,000 or over with five of those selling for £200,000 or more. The average grew 23% to a record £53,490 while huge demand from buyers from all over the world drove the clearance rate to an impressive 91%.

Topping today’s opening session was Ballyhimikin Stud’s Bated Breath colt (Lot 195) who was knocked down to Joe Foley after a prolonged bidding duel with Angus Gold and Mags O’Toole for £270,000.

Grove Stud consigned the day’s second highest lot with their Kodiac colt (Lot 33) going to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for £260,000 – one of four yearlings purchased by the Club today.

Other highlights included Grangemore Stud’s Dark Angel colt (Lot 125) who was sold to SackvilleDonald for £250,000, Glenvale Stud’s Dark Angel colt (Lot 86) who went to Shadwell for £240,000, and Manister House Stud’s Teofilo colt (Lot 161) who was knocked down to Godolphin for £200,000.
