BRIRISH raider St Michel just failed to peg back Red Cardinal in the Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park, New York.

Sir Mark Prescott's four-year-old stayed on strongly but could not catch Red Cardinal, who took the Grade 3 prize over two miles for German trainer Andreas Wohler, in the hands of Eduardo Pedroza.
