ST MORITZ staged its third and final meeting of the season on the frozen lake last Sunday and the feature race was won by an Irish-bred son of Galileo.

Formerly trained by Fozzy Stack, the four-year-old Wargrave was having his first run for British trainer George Baker in the 10-furlong event, which he won by a length and a half.

When trained in Ireland, he won a seven-furlong maiden on the opening day of the 2019 flat turf season at Naas. Racing in the colours of the South African-owned Cayton Park Stud in England, the colt registered a few decent placed efforts in better company before being sold for 100,000gns to George Baker at Tattersalls in October.

Last Sunday, Wargrave made all to win the big race which had a winner’s purse of around €45,000.

Writing on his website on Wednesday, Baker reported that the bay arrived home safely. “Fresh as paint, and diving into his feed as soon as he walked into his stable. A dude of a horse. The cunning plan was executed superbly by all the team, and I could not be prouder of them. And hopefully we have a very talented horse to run in some of the bigger handicaps in the months ahead. Emulating [Belgian] Bill in the Hunt Cup? I’m getting a little ahead of myself.”
