HAVING led the dressage and jumped one of only two show jumping clears, it was disappointing to see EI110 (J) leaders Brian Bourke and Killea Quality Cruz walk home from the country.

It’s an ill wind that blows no good however, and benefitting to take the pole position was the smart pairing of Matthew Kelly and the six-year-old Fanlehane Nariah. Runner-up in the CCI*Intro at Ballindenisk back in the spring, the Sibon-sired gelding has a formidable record, and certainly looks one to watch.

Slower in the country Grace Scully with Carric Pic and Mix were five marks adrift in second, from Paddy Smullen with Avalon Romulus.

Just two went to post in the EI110 (P) with Andrew Walsh returning as the only finisher with Battlestown Delight. Having only just taken over the ride on her brother Josh’s European team pony Ardeo Fireman, Millstreet heroine Carla Williamson made a perfect debut by heading the EI100 (P) from the front.

Although the pair did tip a coloured rail, they retained their opening advantage to stay in front of Kate Corrigan (Fortane Silver Fox) as well as third-placed Lauren Dempsey (Bandit of Coilltedubh), who delivered the sole double-clear round. Interestingly, seven of the nine starters were Connemara ponies.

Another brand new partnership to win at the first time of asking was that of the EI 100 (J) victors Oleana Cowan and RCA Royal Mist. A former charge of Belline Equestrian, bred by Richard Ames and previously ridden by Gillian Beale King, the experienced 10-year-old looks to be an ideal junior conveyance.

The duo led from flag fall, and completing on their opening score, they headed Eimear Nee (Charlie of Blakehill) as well as Laura Jane Mahony with Chilled Bud.

Maisie Sheehy and the well-named Miss Ever So Clever led the six runners from the get-go in the EI 90 (J).The pair posted a smart opening score of 27.00, and with nothing further to add, they stayed in front of Ciara O’Connor, who was also double clear with Ashwood Ramiro Diamond. All but one completed with a clean sheet, and in dressage order Emily Salter and Fore Sure filled second. This fixture was staged as the third of four at the venue, with the on October 1st.
