CLEM McMahon guided Mr Basil to win the five- and six-year-old Horse Sport Ireland Autumn Development Series final at Cavan Equestrian on Saturday afternoon. The class, which carried a €2,950 prize pot, attracted a large field of 89 combinations, and saw 33 of them posted a double-clear round over the two phases.

Mr Basil is a six-year-old gelding by Plot Blue. out of Michelle (Hermes De Reve), who is owned by Alistair McIvor and bred by Marcus Buser.

McMahon posted a second round time of 27.38, just over half a second faster than second-placed Johanna Sixt, riding Sandra Duffy’s Dutch-bred mare L’Amant Van de Zeilhoek (Diamant de Semilly x Good Times) in 27.71.

Nicola FitzGibbon slotted into third place with Langara Ventures’ gelding Galwaybay Sparkie (Spartacus x Clinton), bred by Justin Burke, in 27.87. Fourth was Noletta Smyth’s home-bred mare Mulvin Springball (Beach Ball x HHS BR Charlton) with Jonathan Smyth on board.

Eddie Moloney guided Ann Moloney’s five-year-old home-bred mare Twain Flight (Luidam x Mark Twain) into fifth. The sixth and final place went to another home-bred five-year-old, Sean Mulkern’s ABS Misty (Tyson x Clover Brigade), ridden by Brendan Murphy.

The four-year-old development series final offered a €2,500 prize fund. A total of 72 contenders lined out for the 1m two-phase class.

Some 39 of these managed to leave all the fences intact and divided the prize money between them. A further 18 had one down for four faults, with the remaining 15 collected more than four.

Six/seven-year-old final

Waterford-based Belgian rider Cyril Cools and his Italian owner Martina Romagnoli had reason to celebrate last Friday evening after their seven-year-old mare Coryfree T&L Z won the seven- and eight-year-old HSI Autumn Development Series final at what was their first show in Ireland.

By Corydon van T&L out of Goya VD Kornelishoeve (Bentley Van De Heffinck), the pair posted a double-clear round in the two-phase class and recorded a second round time of 25.70 to secure the victory.

Another seven-year-old, Brian McConville’s mare BWE Nonstop Caprice (Nonstop x Artist), ridden by Shane O’Reilly, took the runner-up spot, stopping the clock at 26.51.

Nicole Kershaw finished third with Keonan Stables’ seven-year-old mare Fury (Cornet Obolensky x Aventyno Z), bred by Linzi Johston, in a time of 27.01

Patrick Hickey and Catriona Redmond’s eight-year-old mare Emelee (Emerald Van’t Ruytershof x Lux Z), bred by John James Hassett, took fourth place in 27.48.

Young rider Ruairi Aylward and James Kavanagh’s Clonagoose Sky Bouncer (Killinick Bouncer x Scribano) were fifth, while SGS Pride of the Hill (Tolan R x Porsch) took sixth for owner/rider Stephen Gibson.
