THE dust will hardly have settled on the Breeders’ Cup meeting next weekend when the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale gets underway on Monday week, November 7th.

Running over nine days, the sale features over 3,700 horses, mainly mares and foals. As the yearling market has been so strong in the USA this year, trade is expected to be very strong.

The sale will open with a single-day Book 1 which showcases an exceptional selection of highly prized broodmares, broodmare prospects and weanlings. In total, the catalogue has more than 1,800 fillies and mares, and over 1,500 foals.

A total of 170 stallions have foals on offer, including Horse of the Year Authentic with 16 members of his first crop. Other sires represented by their first foals include champions Game Winner, Improbable and Maximum Security; Preakness winner War Of Will; and Grade 1 winners Complexity, McKinzie, Tiz The Law and Vekoma.

There are mares in foal to 168 stallions, among them American Pharoah, Constitution, Curlin, Girvin, Gun Runner, Justify, Medaglia d’Oro, More Than Ready, Omaha Beach, Quality Road, Speightstown, Tapit, Uncle Mo, Upstart, War Front and Wootton Bassett.

In addition, the sale also includes some of the first mares in foal to Horse of the Year Knicks Go, champion Essential Quality and Grade 1 winners Charlatan, Maxfield, Silver State and Yaupon.

Exciting

In recent days there have been some very exciting supplementary entries. Champion racemare Midnight Bisou will be offered for sale on day one. The seven-year-old by Midnight Lute is in foal to Tapit.

Another late entry of note include the two-year-old filly American Apple (by American Pharoah), who won a Grade 3 at Aqueduct recently and could run at the Breeders’ Cup.

Princess Julia is a daughter of Distorted Humor and champion Folklore (by Tiznow), who is in foal to Medaglia d’Oro.

And there’s the Irish-bred Wakanaka, a four-year-old filly by Power, bred by Jean Brennan and originally sold for just £3,500 at the Goffs UK Silver Yearling Sale. After winning at listed and Group 3 level in Italy, she transferred to North American and won at Grade 2 level and was placed in Grade 1 company.

Another Irish-bred of note is Chardy Party, a three-year-old Dark Angel filly bred by Yeomanstown who won a Grade 3 race at Belmont last May.

Chardy Party was trained by Wesley Ward, as was Ruthin, a three-year-old daughter of Ribchester who has twice run at Royal Ascot and has won at listed level at Keeneland.
