WE will learn a bit more about the strength of the store horse market next Thursday when over 250 unbroken three-year-olds are offered for sale at Tattersalls Ireland.

This sale was only established in 2018 and, despite the Covid interruption, it has established itself as a serious auction. Cheltenham Festival winner Slade Steel was sold for €30,000 here in 2021. Another Henry de Bromhead-trained Festival winner, Telmesomethinggirl, was also sourced at this sale, as was Nicky Henderson’s Grade 1 winner Jango Baie.

Among the top lots to sell in 2023 was a half-sister to Arkle Chase winner Simonsig, and a half-sister to Grade 1-winning novice chaser Sporting John. Last year’s average price was €14,264 and the median was €11,750. The top price paid was €65,000.

As last year’s crop have only turned four, not many have had the chance to run but one of the top lots (€46,000) was Gentleman Toboot who scored at Lingstown in March.

Next Thursday’s catalogue features some well-related siblings to blacktype performers. There’s a Diamond Boy half-sister to dual Grade 3 winner Robin De Carlow and a Telescope half-sister to Grade 2 winner Killala Quay.

Also catalogued is a Shirocco half-sister to eight-time winner Court Maid, a Jet Away half-brother to five-time winner Futbolisto, an Elusive Pimpernel half-brother to five-time winner Different Gravey.

Two Walk In The Parks to note are the gelding out of Grade 1 winner La Segnora and the gelding out of four-time winner Tiarella.

All the top stallion are represented, including Blue Bresil, Jeu St Eloi, Doctor Dino, Cokoriko, Affinisea, Kingston Hill, Getaway, No Risk At All, Jack Hobbs, Mahler, Westerner, Soldier Of Fortune and Order Of St George.

Blue Bresil’s stock include a gelding out of a half-sister to three-time Grade 1 winner Go Native. There’s also a Harzand gelding out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Roksana, a Doyen filly out of a half-sister to Grade 1-winning novice chaser Kalashnikov, and a Vadamos gelding out of a half-sister to Grade 1-winning novice chaser Dedigout.

Also worth noting are a Poet’s Word gelding out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Weapon’s Amnesty, a Maxios gelding out of a half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner L’Ami Serge, a Success Days gelding out of a half-sister to three-time Grade 1 winner Bob Olinger, and a Vadamos filly out of a half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner The New One.

All horses catalogued are eligible for the €100,000 Tattersalls Ireland George Mernagh Memorial Sales Bumper 2025.

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said: “The profile of the May Store Sale has shot to prominence with the exploits of our Grade 1 graduates Slade Steel and Jango Baie. This year’s catalogue has attracted the progeny of sires that are in demand by National Hunt purchasers, while also attracting a nice blend of well-related siblings and the progeny out of smart race mares.”
