PADDINGTON is the new poster boy for the Arqana October Yearling Sale.

The Siyouni colt was bought for €420,000 at the Deauville auction in 2021 and went on to win four Group 1 races in a row this season for trainer Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners. He could add to that haul in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on October 21st or perhaps he will pop up in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita two weeks later.

Just last Saturday, there was another great advertisement for the October Sale when the Joseph O’Brien-trained Islandsinthestream won a valuable sales race at ParisLongchamp. The Wootton Bassett colt, who cost €135,000 at this sale last year, scooped a first prize of €140,000 by winning the race, which was part of the five-race €1.5 million Arqana Series, restricted to Arqana graduates. All the yearlings offered at the October Sale are eligible for the four races in the Arqana Series for two-year-olds in 2024.

Other October Sale graduates to make headlines this year include Game Run, Grey Man, Light Infantry, Avenue De France, Moon Ray, Chesspiece, Revalita, Birr Castle, Zorken, Vicious Harry, Loose Cannon, Shalromy, Immensitude, Plesant Jane, Nadette, Cash Equity, Heartache Tonight, Vert Liberte, Desert Icon and Hooking.

The average price at last year’s sale was just under €44,000 and the median was €26,000, slightly down on the previous year. This year there are 731 yearlings catalogued, up slightly on last year’s record number.

There are three sections - Part 1 on Tuesday, Part 2 on Wednesday-Thursday and Part 3 on Friday-Saturday.

The catalogue offers yearlings by leading sires Adlerflug, American Pharoah, Australia, Camelot, Churchill, Cracksman, Dark Angel, Frankel, Galiway, Intello, Invincible Spirit, Kingman, Le Havre, Lope De Vega, Mehmas, New Bay, Night Of Thunder, No Nay Never, Oasis Dream, Sea The Moon, Sea The Stars, Showcasing, Siyouni, Starspangledbanner, Wootton Bassett, and Zarak.
