THERE will be plenty of Irish interest at this week’s Arqana Summer Sale in Deauville. The two-day sale includes two-year-old breezers, two- and three-year-old stores, and horses in training under both codes, including a 2022 classic winner.

This is a sale where Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott made purchases last year, and it’s not unusual to see agents representing J.P. McManus make acquisitions at this sale. Two years ago Michael Shefflin and Ellmarie Holden picked up French Aseel for just €62,000 here, and this year’s Punchestown Festival runner-up Gin Coco (Harry Fry) was bought at the same sale for €80,000.

Before the pandemic, Monbeg Stables bought stores at this sale and it will be interesting to see if any point-to-point handlers or owners get involved.

This is the sale where David O’Meara bought the prolific Lord Glitters and where Paul Nicholls discovered three-time Grade 1 winner Greaneteen and Aintree Grade 1 novice hurdle winner Gelino Bello.

Stolen Silver, Malakhana and French Dynamite are other graded race winners this season who came from this sale.

Lots of Irish vendors feature among the breeze-up vendors, including Micky Cleere, John Bourke, Thomond O’Mara, Willie Browne, Ardglass Stables, Knockatrina, Robson Aguiar, Brendan Holland and Andy Slattery.

Sires represented in this section include Bated Breath, Cotai Glory, Churchill, Exceed And Excel, Kodiac, Lope De Vega, Mehmas, Shalaa, Siyouni, Wootton Bassett, Zarak, and the late Le Havre and Zoffany, as well as members of the first crops of Expert Eye, Havana Grey, Harry Angel, Seahenge and Sioux Nation.

The 143 two- and three-year-old stores on offer include sons and daughters of Authorized, Buck’s Boum, Cokoriko, Doctor Dino, Great Pretender, Kapgarde, Masked Marvel, Montmartre, No Risk At All and Saint Des Saints.

You can buy half-brothers to Grade 1 winners Stormy Ireland and Very Wood, or a half-sister to Grand National hero One For Arthur.

Breeding stock

Irish Derby winner Santiago was bought in utero here in 2016 for €275,000 as part of a Shadwell dispersal. This year’s breeding stock section features 67 broodmares and 40 fillies, including 20 lots from the Aga Khan Studs.

Of the broodmares catalogued, some are in foal to National Hunt stallions Blue Bresil, Goliath Du Berlais, Great Pretender and Nirvana Du Berlais, and flat sires Gleneagles, Sioux Nation, The Grey Gatsby, Victor Ludorum and Zelzal.

Horses-in-training

A total of 150 horses-in-training on the flat will be offered including consignments from Al Shaqab Racing, Aga Khan Studs, Wertheimer et Frère, and trainers Fabrice Chappet, Nicolas Clément, Henri-François Devin, Mikel Delzangles, Mauricio Delcher Sanchez, André Fabre, Christophe Ferland, Francis-Henri Graffard, Freddy Head, Carlos Laffon-Parias and Jean-Claude Rouget.

Some National Hunt horses are also catalogued from trainers such as Dominique Bressou, François Nicolle and Mickaël Seror.
