2:30 Jersey Stakes (Group 3)

The 15/8 favourite Ivawood proved a huge disappointment leaving a finish fought out by John Hills and his father Barry with Dutch Connection prevailing at 14/1 from the filly Fadhayyil. Bossy Guest ran to his Guineas form in third. Ivawood raced prominently but found nothing when asked for an effort. He was eased to finish 14th, beating only two home. This was one race that didn’t work out for Ryan Moore who was repeatedly denied a clear run on Sir Isaac Newton who ran on well for sixth but would have gone close with a clear run. Dutch Connection, a son of Dutch Art had sprung a 16/1 surprise in the Acomb Stakes at York and was two and a half lengths behind Gleneagles in the National Stakes last year but was well beaten in the Guineas. Things will be tougher now than this Group 3. Toscanini ran well for fifth and may be better back at six furlongs

3:05 Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2)

Wesley Ward’s once raced American challenger had been well talked up and Acapulco didn’t disappoint from start to finish. Dwarfing her opponents beforehand as No Nay Never and Hootenanny had before her, she received another excellent ride from Ryan Moore who didn’t blaze away as stablemate Ruby Notion had in the Windsor Castle last year, but raced prominently the near side group before striding away in the final furlong to win easily. “Controlled aggression not naked aggression” as Graham Cunningham noted on Channel 4. Easton Angel was clearly second best but did meet a monster in every way here. Besharah took third giving the from a solid look but the winner was different class. Wesley Ward’s comments "I think she's got a big future on turf, she's a beautiful, gorgeous filly and to look at her you'd think she was four," said it all.

3:40 Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) 1m

Integral was the short priced favourite to give Ryan Moore another winner but proved a big disappointment finishing fifth and failing to beat her stablemate Bragging (4th). Rizeena has always been very talented and was twice a Royal winner. She travelled well and looked about to return to her top form of last year when she took over three out but Amazing Maria (25/1), revitalised by David O’Meara, threw down a strong challenge on the near side and ran on strongly to defeat Clive Brittain’s filly by two lengths. Cladocera took third without looking any danger to the first two. Amazing Maria had been high class at two for Ed Dunlop winning a Group 3 at Goodwood but after finishing last in the Oaks on her reappearance last year looked to have lost her form until a move to David O’Meara saw a gradual return to form. She may well step up successfully in class now. Disappointingly Euro Charlene failed to go into the stalls though they did not seen to give her a huge amount of time, leaving trainer Marco Botti annoyed.

4:20 Prince of Wales´s Stakes (Group 1) 1m2f

The highlight of the day didn’t disappoint and brought another Irish Group 1 winner. Off a 242 day absence there’s no doubt Free Eagle was a worthy winner on just his fifth start but The Grey Gatsby was undoubtedly unlucky. Pat Smullen gave the winner an excellent ride getting into pole position off the bend and avoiding any trouble. He said later “I don’t think ever got as much pleasure from riding a winner.” Smullen took closer order on the outer of the leader Gailo Chop before the turn in and controlled things from there on. Despite it looking as it The Grey Gatsby would have go up with a clearer run, the winner was entitled to be tiring as he hit the line. His time was still the fastest on the day. There has to improvement to come and hopefully he will stay injury free and fulfil all his potential, and a Leopardstown rematch with the second on the way to the Arc. Smullen also said: "I can't tell you how good a training performance that was. It has not been anything but difficult as there is nothing easy about getting Free Eagle here today.”

The Grey Gatsby has looked a horse who lengthens rather than quickens instantly, as at Leopardstown last year off a fast pace, and he was denied a clear run by Western Hymn for a crucial stage up the straight. With a clear run he would have won this but chances of revenge would not be guaranteed. Western Hymn ran his best race yet in third and will surely pick up a Group 1 abroad, especially on easy ground. Christophe Soumillon had another wayward ride on a Japanese challenger as Spielberg repeatedly hung into Cannock Chase in the final two furlongs. Sir Michael Stoute’s runner would be suited to a race like the Princess of Wales’s at Newmarket. The two French runners were disappointing especially Ectot. The Corscian ran much better than his previous form in fourth.

5:00 Royal Hunt Cup 1m

Some well fancied runners involved in the finish here with another winner for Ryan Moore, this time for John Gosden on 8/1 shot GM Hopkins who held of Temptress (9/1) with Chil The Kite (16/1), second last year, taking third. It was a first Royal Ascot win for owner Robin Geffen with a horse who had started favourite for the Lincoln. The field split into two and though not a comprehensive verdict, it looks like the far side has been the place to be. That was where the pace was here with Sirius Prospect leading them a merry gallop. Many of those drawn high moved over to the far side most notably the second Temptress who had no choice when being carried over by American Hope. However, this proved fortuitous as she got an unimpeded run up the far rail having been drawn 19 on the stands side. Only Balty Boys in fourth got into contention of those who raced on the stands side. Sirius Prospect took them to the two mark on the far side with Bronze Angel well in contention and taking over. Chil The Kite was unlucky in not getting a clear run while Ayaar, travelled well but found nothing late on. Speculative Bid ran well in fifth. Bronze Angel ran another good race but is high in the handicap. Spark Plug was dropping back when he clipped heals resulting in a nasty fall for Jimmy Fortune.

5:35 Sandringham Handicap (Listed Race) (Fillies) 1m

The Wednesday finale had a well backed short priced favourite in Godolphin’s Always Smile. Punters were unlucky not to collect as she led inside the final furlong but drifted badly left and threw away her advantage to Osaila who Frankie Dettori drove home for his 50th Royal Ascot winner. Always Smile had hung across the winner causing some interference but had James Dole pulled his whip through to the left hand she may well have hung on instead of losing by a nose. Had she won a stewards inquiry would have been interesting. Dettori again showed he is no back number taking advantage of the favourite’s wandering, and ironically relegating the Godolphin colours to second.
