ROBBIE Irwin is a brave man. The Dublin broadcaster will venture into the Kingdom of Kerry next week where he will be the parade ring MC for the four-day Killarney August Festival (Wednesday to Saturday).
“I’ve been doing the job for over 10 years, so they are used to me by now and there is always plenty of good-natured Gaelic football banter between me and the locals,” Robbie reported. “Vincent Casey runs the Racecourse Supporters’ Club and he is also chair of the Dr Crokes club. There is a big crossover between the two.”
As an award-winning sports broadcaster, Robbie is used to interviewing all manner of sporting figures and guests in the parade ring. However, one of the highlights for him next week will be the annual visit of the Rose of Tralee contestants.
But there is also homework to be done. “Typically my day will also include visits to the race sponsor’s box or other corporate facilities to welcome guests and pass on a few tips,” he says.
“They don’t all win but I do seem to get invited back, so I must be doing something right.”
If he survives the week in Killarney, Robbie will be off to Kilbeggan, the Curragh, Fairyhouse and Limerick in the coming weeks. “I adore going racing and would love to do even more of it.”
Robbie can be contacted on 087 2395394.
