CHAMPION trainer John Dunlop has died following a long illness. He was 78.
He sent out many classic and Group 1 stars during a career that lasted close to 50 years, including luminaries such as Shirley Heights (Derby, Irish Derby), Salsabil (1000 Guineas, Oaks, Irish Derby), Habibti (July Cup, King's Stand Stakes, Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp), Sakhee (Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Juddmonte International Stakes), Bahri (Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, St James's Palace Stakes), Methaaf (Irish 1000 Guineas), Celeric (Gold Cup), and Erhaab (Derby).
One of the all-time greats of his profession, he retired in 2012, and his sons Ed and Harry are both carrying on the family name as trainers of note.
