French winner over fences
for Sumbal and Harry Swan
BOARDSMILL Stud stallion Sumbal enjoyed more success this week in France when his daughter Dear Weaver recorded her third consecutive success over jumps at Clairefontaine on Monday. She was ridden on this occasion, over fences, by Irish amateur Harry Swan who was having just his second ride on French soil. The Hugo Merienne-trained five-year-old is one of just nine foals from Sumbal’s first crop which were conceived in France and she was recording her fourth win from just eight starts for her new connections. She has amassed over €130,000 in prize money to date. Sumbal’s first Boardsmill-conceived crop of three-year-olds were well-received at this year’s store sales, realising up to €80,000.
Liam McKenna wins appeal against Galway careless riding ban
JUMP jockey Liam McKenna has won his appeal against an eight-day suspension for careless riding imposed on him on the final day of the Galway Races. McKenna was riding Battle Of Ridgeway in a handicap hurdle and was one of seven riders involved in an incident on a bend.
The raceday stewards held McKenna chiefly responsible and also gave Sean Cleary-Farrell a two-day ban. In his appeal McKenna argued that the incident was caused by “general bunching”.
The Appeals Body accepted that McKenna was not guilty of careless riding. Cleary-Farrell was unsuccessful in his appeal against his two-day suspension.
Flat jockey Adam Caffrey also failed to have a four-day ban overturned by the Appeals Body. He picked up his suspension for careless riding aboard Comfort Line in the Galway handicap won by Storm Averted on the second last day of the Festival.
Juvenile winner for In Swoop
IN Swoop, the German Derby winner who stands at The Beeches Stud, had a two-year-old winner in Norway this week from his first crop. Tarantina, a juvenile filly, won on her debut for trainer Tobias Hellgren and owner-breeders Dean and Mette Olsen.
The filly’s dam Transsylvania (by Le Havre) won the Listed Lanwades Stud Stakes at Ovrevoll and has now produced four winners from four foals, including Dansk 2000 Guineas winner Tassmania and Dansk Derby winner Titannia.
