The Goffs Orby Sale produced its first seven-figure transaction of the week on Tuesday when M.V. Magnier of Coolmore Stud spent €1.9 million on a full-sister to Group 1 winner and stallion Blackbeard.
The yearling filly was consigned by Ciaran Conroy's Glenvale Stud.
Afterwards, Magnier told the press: "She is a lovely filly and Blackbeard too was a very good racehorse. His yearlings are selling very well, they look very promising and he is having a good sale, and apparently, he has a good few good ones coming up in the next couple of weeks."
Two years ago Magnier bought Minnie Hauk at this sale for €1.8 million. The dual Oaks winner is now favourite for Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Magnier said: "Ben Sangster, in fairness to him, sold her here a couple of years ago and she made a lot of money as well. It is a real advertisement for the sale. To win an Arc you need something special. Aidan is very happy with her. It would be great for the lads."
Coolmore already have an exciting full-brother to Blackbeard in Charles Darwin, who has not been seen since winning the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, a race in which he comfortably defeated subsequent Group 1 winner Wise Approach.
Magnier said of Charles Darwin: "Aidan thinks a lot of him, he thinks he is a very good horse. I am not saying that he is Albert Einstein or anything like that – Albert looks like he is special and Charles looks like he is going to be very good.
"There is a lot going on in the family, and the mare [Muirin] is in foal to Wootton Bassett. She is a very valuable filly and it is good for Goffs and for everyone. They have done a good job all week and got people here, and good horses here. Every year something good comes out of the sale.
"To be fair to the mare, she has always had a good looker. Blackbeard was a very nice horse; Charles looks like he could be a proper job."
Coolmore Stud recently suffered a terrible blow when its star stallion Wootton Bassett died suddenly in Australia. Magnier said: "I was a bit down in the mouth when it happened, but my father said that there’s a lot of things to be happy about. We have the best bunch of young horses we ever had in Coolmore – Auguste Rodin, City Of Troy and those types of horses, and they can turn out to be something special. Then there’s the likes of Delacroix, Camille Pissarro to retire.
"I think Delacroix, Henri Matisse and Camille Pissarro will retire – that’s the plan at the minute. It is an exciting time for us with the young horses we have. If we had Albert Einstein running all year, he could have done something exceptional. Thankfully we and our clients have lots of Wootton Bassett produce to look forward to, and mares in foal to him."
A short time after Magnier's €1.9 million purchase, Amo Racing spent €1 million on a Night Of Thunder filly from Noel O'Callaghan's Mountarmstrong Stud. The filly is out of the Group 1 winner No Speak Alexander.
A full report on Wednesday's trade will appear here later.
