September gets the Run in the Reid
MOONEE Valley’s final night meeting for the season featured the Group 1 William Reid Stakes over 1,200 metres.
While Marabi was shooting for eight straight wins, it was not to be the I Am Invincible mare’s night, despite the $1.70 favourite having the run of the race.
Stalking her in the run, before peeling off her back on the turn, the Chris Waller-trained September Run packed a powerful sprint.
Bursting clear at the top of the straight the Exceed And Excel mare captured her second Group 1, having landed the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington in 2020.
“She was probably the best three-year-old of her season and it’s gone backwards since then, but it was a glimpse of September Run last start. She’s been bouncing out of her skin,” said Chris Waller, at Moonee Valley for the first time in three years.
Sherry win on a sodden Rosehill track
TOM Sherry landed his 20th metropolitan winner of the season scoring in the first at Rosehill on Saturday aboard Tampering for Kerry Parker. Sherry’s win placed him seven behind Tyler Schiller in the race for leading apprentice honours.
On the heavy ground which was quickly downgraded, the meeting only lasted three races before being postponed, the remainder, including two Group 1 races, sent to Newcastle on Monday.
“We had a heavy downpour during the running of race 2 and that has really water-logged the track,” said Racing NSW Stewards Chairman Marc Van Gestel.
